To Air Is Human, To Relaunch Divine

January 29, 2007

Two bits of good news: first, Air America has found a new moneybags in the form of Stephen Green, chairman of SL Green Realty Corp.; and second, Al Franken will leave in a few weeks to pursue his Senate dreams while Thom Hartmann takes his place as the early afternoon guy.

Franken is a funny writer with a good head on his shoulders, but his radio show is absolute chloroform. Keeping him on the payroll sucked oxygen away from the rest of the lineup.

I want this venture to succeed, but the bizarre programming decisions — namely, exiling Marc Maron and making Jerry Springer the centerpiece of the morning — had me drifting away. I hope the relaunch helps Air America really take to the air.

I like Al Franken, but I don’t find him especially funny. Insightful, yes, but funny, now.

Garrison Keillor is at the State Theater on Feb 8 and Mrs DBK and I have tickets. Now that’s a funny Minnesotan. Much funnier than Franken. Did you see “The Prairie Home Companion” movie? Hilarious. Meanwhile, I read Franken’s “The Truth: with jokes” and the jokes weren’t funny.

He’s saving his best material for the Senate. You just wait and see.
