Wop Bop A Loo Bop

January 31, 2007

Because Eric Alterman is fond of dropping rock song lyrics as headers for his blog posts, Altercation readers have spontaneously launched an All Time Best Rock Song Lyric contest. This guy fired the first shot with a Robyn Hitchcock verse, and this guy followed suit with a line from . . . jeez, do I really have to tell you where it’s from? Or, for that matter, this one?

Personally, I’ll go with “Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not mine.” This may reflect the fact that I just read Letter to a Christian Nation, a pamphlet by Sam Harris that blows away a lot of the intellectual cobwebbery that has us tiptoeing around other people’s religious views even as they insist on making those religious views the basis of their politics. On the other hand, it’s a line that’s stayed with me since I peeled the plastic from Patti’s first LP and found a soulmate. She grew up in South Jersey, too!
