Jerry Falwell

May 15, 2007

Among the progressive and liberal bloggers I usually read, the reactions to today’s news that Rev. Jerry Falwell has died at the age of 73 have been muted and circumspect. Nobody is cheering, nobody is taking bets on which circle of hell he’s going to land in. I’ll do likewise. His baleful influence on American politics and social discourse is there for everyone to see.

Let this self-proclaimed man of God be judged by his own words. Let’s remember the words this preacher of God’s love had to offer America in the wake of the terrible events of 9/11:

I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say, “You helped this happen.”

Falwell had a lot else to say, much of it on that same vile level. Nothing that gets said about him in death can ever sink to the cruelty and ignorance of the things he said to others while alive.

Great timing for Newt, speaker at upcoming Liberty U commencement.

Quite interesting to see so many news reports that seem to be trying to balance the death of a public figure, which should not be rejoiced, and yet include a good number of his unsavory deeds and statements. A lot of it appears to be damning with faint praise, which is as it should be.
