They Love Libby

June 6, 2007

What do failed-state engineer Donald Rumsfeld, hacks-for-hire Mary Matalin and James Carville, ex-Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky and New Republic book editor Leon Wieseltier all have in common? They loves them that “Scooter” Libby. Treason isn’t all that big a deal with this crew, I guess.

It all has a certain comic-opera aspect since there is every reason to expect that a Libby pardon, delivered during what will no doubt be a long drawn-out appeals process, will be one of the parting kicks the boy emperor administers to the country he swore to defend.

George II is famously scornful of the precedent set by his father in the White House, but here’s one lesson from the reign of George I that his son will follow to the letter: Always pardon the people who might get you thrown into jail yourself. Blood may be thicker than water, but sleaze beats them both.
