Beach Blanket Blasphemy

June 23, 2007

Decades of Jesus whooping and crap piety, capped off by six years of Bush-led Christianist hypocrisy and faith-based nuttery, have finally triggered a backlash. Anti-religion books by Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris have been selling extremely well, but the big winner of the summer looks to be Christopher Hitchens, whose book God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything has become the surprise hit of the summer. I could almost forgive his war-whoring on Iraq and his straight-up whoring on Scooter Libby. Just goes to show that when you wanna find some truffles, ya gotta get a swine.

My friend in Melbourne says those atheist polemics are also selling well in Australia. Big trend – wouldn’t count on it to last.

  2. Stash Says:

As even a blind squirrel will bump into a nut once in a while, Hitchens appears to have gotten one right.

I think that makes him 1 for about 260, doesn’t it?

  3. Cautious Man Says:

You have to remember, a lot of people are reading Hitchens’ book to find out what his arguments are, not because they agree with him.

And, sorry, but there’s nothing new there, it’s Sam Harris with a veneer of Hitchens’ alleged wit. He shows the same type of thinking that resulted in his whole-hearted embrace of the Iraq war.
