Second Stage Rovism

August 17, 2007

One of the hallmarks of Karl Rove’s political strategy was that a filthy lie, repeated often enough and loudly enough from many different quarters, will eventually be accepted as true or at least potentially true by the general public. By this method, John Kerry — a decorated war hero who went into the teeth of enemy fire in Vietnam — was turned into a malingering liar who falsified his record in the minds of semi-sentient voters, while George W. Bush — a layabout who pulled strings to get himself an undemanding stateside position — was reshaped as a swaggering warrior with blood in his eye. That’s First Stage Rovism: When life gives you a clown, call him a statesman until the press starts nodding along.

Now that the end of George II’s unjustly long reign is in sight, and Rove himself has stepped down in order to spend more time with his family dodging subpoenas, we are about the enter Second Stage Rovism. This will take the form of former Bush administration minions and their sycophants trumpeting the grand accomplishments of the most crooked and corrupt president ever to soil the Oval Office carpet. This trumpery will extend not just to the Boy Emperor, but his stooges as well — Rove himself, for example. It starts here but it won’t be ending anytime soon.
