Compassionate Conservatism

October 2, 2008

If you ever had any doubts about the basic creepiness underlying the surface charm of the late William F. Buckley, check out this item about how the apostle of conservatism and family values cut his 8-year-old grandson out of his will.  Buckley’s son Christopher (author of Thank You For Smoking and other novels) fathered the boy during a fling with his book publicist and has refused to have any contact with the child. The old man left his multimillion-dollar estate to Christopher and his two “legitimate” sons, making no provision for the “illegitimate” grandson, who suffers from behavioral disorders and needs special care.

Funny, isn’t it, how the people who squeal the loudest for decency and moral principles often end up during the most sleazy and lowdown things? And how these same proponents of “family values” show their disapproval of immoral behavior by punishing the most blameless and helpless party — the child?
